The short answer
It may be easiest to think of a web browser like a driver with a camera.
You tell the driver where to go, they visit that place, take lots of photographs, and quickly bring them back for you to look at.
If you tell them to visit www.techandtalk.co.uk, you do that by typing the address into the address bar. Your browser then visits the website and displays it for you.
Like supermarkets, there are the "big four" web browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. There are also many others, and some of those smaller browsers introduce ideas and features that eventually make their way into the big four.
Why do I need one?
Your web browser is the program that displays websites.
Almost every website you visit is shown through a web browser. There are other ways to access information from websites, but for most people the browser is the tool they use every day.
Just as every supermarket has a different layout when you walk through the doors, every website has its own design. Your browser's job is simply to display each website as it was created.
Remember
A web browser takes you to a website and displays it.
A search engine helps you find websites.
